The Other Side of the Tattoo Chair

The Other Side of the Tattoo Chair

Getting tattooed when you're usually the one holding the machine is a whole different experience. One of our artists here at Crooked Soul took that leap across the ocean, no less, to learn from one of her biggest inspirations in Germany.

“I really wanted to learn from her,” said Eva W. “Her style is so realistic, and the way she renders fur is just insane. One day, I hope to tattoo like her.”

What started as admiration turned into something more personal. Eva Williams first came across Natasha’s work through another artist she followed — someone who had just placed at the Milano Tattoo Convention. When she saw that artist had taken third, Eva thought, “If she got third… who got first?” That question led her straight to Natasha, and eventually to booking a tattoo nearly a year in advance.

The design itself came together just a few days before the first session. “I told her I wanted an arctic fox with a crescent moon on its forehead. I gave her full creative freedom after that. What she came back with was incredible; she even created a little story for the piece. The poppies she included? They make people sleepy. So the fox in the tattoo takes care of your dreams.”

Traveling to Germany to get tattooed by a stranger in a different language is a bold move; one made with a little push from her mentor, Eva Perez. “I remember telling her about Natasha and how I wanted to tattoo like her, and the first thing Eva P. said was, ‘You need to get tattooed by her.’ So I did.”

What followed was four grueling sessions, each lasting 8–10 hours. “It was a wake-up call. I finally understood what I put my clients through. The pain, the numbness, the flinching; it made me more empathetic as an artist.”

Now, the tattoo feels like a piece of pride. A dreamy, vibrant, detailed reminder of what it means to take a leap and how powerful that can be when the right artist is behind the needle.

“Every time I look at it, I get giddy. I love foxes. I love poppies. I love that this tattoo is mine forever.”

“If you're sitting on an idea for a tattoo but haven’t taken the leap yet, I totally understand being in that position. It’s a big decision! Just make sure you find an artist that you admire, is experienced, and tattoos in a style that you know you love. It’s always best to find someone who has great attention to detail!”
